The hot chloroauric acid is made to be reacted in the presence of the sodium citrate solution.

As a result,colloidal gold is produced because here the ions in the citrate solution act as a reducing agent. Other two usefulmethods of gold nanoparticle synthesis are Brust method and Martin method. In the Brustprocess, the gold particles that are formed are of 2 to 6 nm in diameter. There are three sub-methods invented by Martin to obtain a good quality of gold nanoparticles.
